What is Family Mediation?

Family mediation is a support and conflict resolution process primarily aimed at couples and families undergoing separation or divorce. However, it is also effective in broader conflict contexts, such as disputes between adult siblings or inheritance issues. The main goals of these processes are:

  • Reach a Fair Agreement: Facilitate an understanding between the involved parties.
  • Manage Conflicts: Resolve disputes constructively.
  • Process Emotions: Help overcome complex feelings such as the grief of separation and the pain of abandonment.
  • Change Relational Dynamics: Modify interaction patterns related to conflicts.

Types of Family Mediation

Family mediation processes can be initiated through various methods:

  1. Voluntary: Couples and families spontaneously approach the Shinui center.
  2. Requested by Lawyers: Lawyers collaborate with the center to start the mediation process.
  3. Court Referral: Suggested by the court, as provided by Ministerial Decree 151 of 30/5/2024, these mediations are a valuable resource for managing complex and prolonged disputes. They offer the opportunity to resolve conflicts that seem insurmountable and to build a better life.

Intercultural Family Mediation

Intercultural mediation is a professional practice addressing human systems such as couples, families, groups, businesses, and institutions characterized by a plurality of cultures and languages. The goal of intercultural mediation is to value differences, create a shared language, and resolve conflicts non-violently, addressing apparent incompatibilities between different cultures (Edelstein, 2007).

In the context of intercultural family mediation, the aim is to resolve intra-family and couple conflicts within the migrant population (Edelstein, 2018) and where different cultures coexist. We accompany mixed couples, including in separation processes, migrant families with intergenerational conflicts, and we deal with foster and adoptive family contexts.

International Family Mediation

International family mediation is a specialized service offered by the Shinui center. Our mediators have extensive experience in handling transnational cases. We use modern communication tools like Zoom to facilitate meetings, allowing members of couples residing in different countries to actively participate in the mediation.
